Kylie and Daniel. Wow. Where do I start?
Kristina first knew of Kylie after photographing her sister's wedding last fall. Then the emails started. It turns out she was going into her senior year at Pitt State and needed and internship. She must have been instantly struck by Kristina's aura of coolness and knew at that moment that she had to be near wherever this coolness came from. That meant she could only intern at one place: FX Studios.
We've never had a true intern - we've hosted dozens of one-day job shadows for area high schoolers, and have done several tours and open houses for the college and area photographers. We get probably 20-30 emails or calls each year with people inquiring about an opportunity. The reason we've never really done it is with our schedule we don't have a lot of opportunity to really stop, sit down, and teach anyone how to do the things we need done quickly. They're a disturbance to the force around here. Plus, I've never been comfortable with having someone hanging around and not getting paid.
Well, Kylie desperately needed a local internship and sent several emails that I tried to either blow off or forward to Kris. She kept vouching for her and said if there was any way I could help that we should. So I made Kylie and offer. I told her that I would sign any paperwork she needed to get the appropriate credit for class and she wouldn't have to complete hardly any of the required hours. I thought she'd be out one day a week every so often and that would be all we'd see her.
I was wrong.
She showed up every day promptly at 10:58, often before the door was even unlocked. She sat attentively next to Kristina for 7 hours a day watching everything she did for weeks. She went to almost every session we had and became indispensable during our shoots. Plus, we all started to really like her! Granted, we tease her a little for our own amusement but everyone gets their dose of medicine around here. That's how we show you we love you!
The summer flew by and we all began to realize that her internship was about to end and we just weren't ready to say goodbye. We worked out a behind-closed-doors deal to get her to stay on until she graduates next year. When she leaves us then it will still be too soon. She's definitely become one of the gang.
Daniel and I first met when I got a strange call on my cell phone a couple of months ago. There was a nervous and unfamiliar voice on the other end. He began to explain his plan to surprise Kylie at work during the day to take her to Kansas City to a Royals game and propose to her. Little did he know that I'm absolutely the worst secret-keeper in the world and it took everything I had not to spill the beans.
My only roll in the whole affair was to make sure Kylie was in the studio the day and time Daniel was stopping in to pick her up. I made up a story about a big class of grade schoolers coming to visit and that we'd need her in the building to help corral them all. Then I completely forgot about the whole deal Daniel showed up in the reception room with some friends and I thought they were clients showing up for a meeting. I scrambled around asking Kris and Annie if they knew who was supposed to be here because there was nothing in the calendar. I was genuinely confused! Kris figured it out and showed them to the sales room where Daniel could properly surprise her. They left together and she came back with a ring on so I'm sure everything went according to plan.
We've gotten to know Daniel over the last couple of months and I can say he's a great catch for Kylie. They're an amazing couple and I hope we get to know them long enough to see how far they go together. Good luck you guys - we're so happy for you!
